Food in Japan: Soba - noodles

 (cold) Soba-noodles with Tempura (deep fried vegetables and fish)

Ate in: Udon-Soba noodle restaurant in Aobadai-Station (The station where my dormitory is). The restaurant has new opened, and I'm very happy about it.

There are three main noodle-types in Japan, Ramen, Udon and Soba. Ramen noodles came from China and are comparable to spaghetti. You might know them from instant-noodle packs. They are very popular, particularly in noodle-soups. Udon and Soba have their origins in Japan and are also popular in noodle-soups but are also severed cold, as you can see on the picture (Soba are more frequently served that way). Udon look like very thick spaghetti and the consistence is quite soft. Soba are made out of buckwheat (Buchweizen). Therefore, they are much firmer and taste basically like nothing. Cold Soba (and also Udon) are traditionally served on bamboo plates, called zaru. You dip it in the black sweet-salty sauce (tsuyu) that you can see on the picture. Please don’t be a complete gai-jin and pour the sauce over the noodles ;). For additional spice you can use Wasabi and shallots (upper left).
Tempura are deep fried fish and vegetables. I put them in the red sweet sauce. I don’t know if this was the right way to eat them, but it tasted right ^^
